What makes our data centres so reliable, robust & efficient?

Data centre power supplies

US Energy Administration

Green Mountain AS are powered entirely by hydro-generated renewable energy with zero emissions. 98.5% of Norway’s electrical power is from renewable sources (a significantly higher % than any other country in Europe/Scandinavia or United States) and many of the largest hydro power stations are close to our data centres. Reliability of each supply is 99.94% and we have multiple robust underground grid power supplies feeding the sites, and an additional layer of support from prime rated stand-by generators.

 

Power Usage Efficiency (PUE)

Green Mountain AS are designed to offer world class Power Usage Efficiency (PUE) of less than 1.2 (PUE is the ratio of total amount of energy used by a data centre facility to the energy delivered to IT equipment).

Our very low PUE is achieved throughout the year because of highly efficient cooling systems and the most efficient technology available in power and cooling infrastructure. This translates into less power consumed in running the data centre compared to most UK facilities which run between 1.4-1.8.

  • Efficient power distribution system (N+N)
  • Top class UPS efficiency (N+N)
  • Efficient cooling (N+N configuration)
  • In row, precision cooling systems (N+1 or N+N configuration)
  • Each client has real time readout in their server room of their PUE and it is included in monthly report and energy billing

Uptime Institute Tier lll Certification

Both of our data centres is Tier lll certified by the Uptime Institute (an internationally acknowledged organisation). Green Mountain has been assessed in detail by the Uptime Institute and their consultants over a 6 month period to ensure compliance. Tier III design provides concurrently maintainable site infrastructure, and the sites exceed that. They are near Tier lV, except for the generators, which are N+1 not N+N because of the very reliable grid supplies. The Uptime Institute’s data centre tier standards are a standardised methodology used to determine availability in a facility. We comply with two forms of Tier Certifications:

  • Tier Certification of Design Documents (awarded DC1-Stavanger and DC2-Rjukan)
  • Tier Certification of Constructed Facility (awarded DC1-Stavanger and DC2-Rjukan)

Monitoring and reporting

Our state-of-the-art award winning DCIM (Data Centre Infrastructure Management) System provides a global holistic, common, real-time monitoring and management platform for all interdependent systems across IT and facility infrastructures. Giving our customers control by way of monitoring and configuring their Data Centre requirements without geographical constraints. Our monitoring solution also provides very detailed monthly reports on all aspect of the technical space.

Meet-me rooms

We have established two fully redundant meet-me-rooms in different parts of each facility for carriers with diverse fibre paths to them. Dedicated meet-me-rooms may also be made available for customers with such requirements.

Operations & Processes

Security sectioned centre

The data centres are sectioned into different security zones for the different parts of the complex. The level for each zone may be adapted to customer requirements.

Biometric access

All access into the centre is controlled by biometric identification system.

Man trap entrance

Each person entering the centre will gain access only through a man trap.

Intelligent video analysis

The outside and surroundings of the site is continuously monitored by an Intelligent video analysis system.

Security system

Our security system and our routines are in compliance with ISO/EN 27002.

Due diligence

Below are some important aspects that Green Mountain AS checked in our extensive due diligence of the sites:

DC1-Stavanger

  • High stability of mountain rock
  • Location is well protected against extreme weather conditions (does not pose risk)
  • The region has very little tidal movement (ca. 40 cm). Storm surge tides are registered since 1904. The site has very good clearance to any potential risk (does not pose risk)
  • Tsunami has never been registered in the region. The topography is such that there is no risk of a flood wave building up approaching the site (depth of 70 m on quayside)
  • There is no heavy industry nor storage of flammable/explosive goods in the vicinity
  • There is no hazardous chemical or oil refining in the vicinity
  • Unprecedented geographical event in fjord system – does not pose risk
  • Checked out risks related to global warming effects

DC2-Telemark

  • High stability of mountain rock foundation
  • Location is well protected against extreme weather conditions (does not pose risk)
  • There is no heavy industry nor storage of flammable/explosive goods in the vicinity
  • There is no hazardous chemical or oil refining in the vicinity
  • River levels in the area confirmed as not being threat to the site

GM has also started the work to establish an Information Security Management System in accordance with NS-ISO/IEC 27001:2013.
